Summary
- White front, yellow rear: This is a legal requirement for all UK vehicles.
- Standard font and spacing only: You cannot change the font, add bolt heads between characters, or alter spacing.
- Illegal plates can lead to a £1,000 fine: And your car will fail its MOT. See our private plates guide for more.
Number plates seem simple, but the rules around them are surprisingly strict. Here is what UK drivers need to know.
Basic Requirements
- Front plate: Must be white with black characters.
- Rear plate: Must be yellow with black characters.
- Font: Must use the standard Charles Wright font.
- Characters: Must be 79mm tall and 50mm wide (except for the number 1 and letter I).
- Spacing: Must follow the standard spacing rules (no rearranging to spell words).
What Is Illegal on Number Plates?
- Altered spacing: Moving characters to make them spell a name or word.
- Non-standard fonts: Italic, 3D, or custom fonts are not allowed.
- Coloured characters: Characters must be black. No other colours.
- Bolt heads between characters: These can disguise the true registration.
- Tinted or smoked plates: These make the plate harder to read and are illegal.
- No plate displayed: All vehicles on public roads must display both plates.
Penalties for Illegal Number Plates
| Offence | Penalty |
|---|---|
| Non-standard plate | Up to £1,000 fine |
| Missing plate | Up to £1,000 fine |
| MOT failure | Automatic fail if plates do not meet standards |
| Plates fail to be read by ANPR | Could trigger a police stop |
What You Can Add to Your Plates
There are a few things you can legally add:
- National flag: A Union Jack, St George's Cross, Scottish Saltire, or Welsh Dragon.
- Country identifier: GB, UK, ENG, SCO, CYM, or WALES.
- Green stripe: For zero-emission vehicles. This is added by the plate supplier.
Buying Replacement Plates
You can only buy number plates from a registered supplier. They must check your identity and vehicle ownership before selling.
You will need to provide:
- Your V5C logbook or new keeper supplement.
- Photo ID (driving licence or passport).
Final Thoughts
Number plate rules are there for safety and identification. Stick to the standard format and avoid modifications.
UK Number Plate Format Explained
UK plates follow a specific format. For cars registered from 2001 onwards:
- Two letters: Show where the car was first registered (e.g., LA = London).
- Two numbers: Show when it was registered (e.g., 24 = March–August 2024).
- Three random letters: Make the plate unique.
Example: LA24 XYZ — registered in London, between March and August 2024.
Age Identifiers
| Registration Period | Number Used |
|---|---|
| March–August 2024 | 24 |
| September 2024–February 2025 | 74 |
| March–August 2025 | 25 |
| September 2025–February 2026 | 75 |
Number Plates When Driving Abroad
If you drive in Europe, you need a GB or UK sticker on your car. Unless your plate already has it printed on.
Since January 2021 (post-Brexit), use a "UK" identifier rather than "GB". Many newer plates include this already.
