Summary
- Learners can now use motorways: Since 2018, learners can drive on motorways with an approved instructor.
- Speed limit is 70 mph: Unless signs say otherwise. Smart motorways may show variable limits.
- Stay left unless overtaking: This is the golden rule. Middle-lane hogging is an offence.
Motorway driving can feel intimidating when you're new to it. The traffic moves fast. The lanes are busy. And the rules are slightly different from normal roads.
But motorways are actually among the safest roads in the UK. This guide gives you everything you need to drive them with confidence.
Before You Join the Motorway
Preparation makes motorway driving much easier.
- Check your car: Make sure your tyres, oil, coolant, and fuel are all at the right levels.
- Plan your route: Know which junction you're joining and leaving at.
- Adjust your mirrors: You'll be checking them constantly. Make sure they're set correctly.
- Check your fuel: Running out of fuel on a motorway is dangerous and embarrassing. Fill up before you go.
Joining the Motorway
The slip road (joining lane) is where many new drivers feel most nervous. Here's how to do it smoothly.
- Build your speed on the slip road. You should be at motorway speed (60–70 mph) before you reach the end.
- Check your mirrors and look over your right shoulder.
- Find a gap in the left-hand lane of the motorway.
- Merge smoothly. Don't stop at the end of the slip road unless absolutely necessary.
- Match the speed of the traffic. Joining too slowly is as dangerous as joining too fast.
Lane Discipline
Lane discipline is one of the most important motorway rules. Get it right and everything flows.
- Lane 1 (left): This is the normal driving lane. Stay here unless you're overtaking.
- Lane 2 (middle): Use this to overtake slower traffic in lane 1. Move back left when you've passed.
- Lane 3 (right): For overtaking traffic in lanes 1 and 2. Move back left as soon as it's safe.
Important: Middle-lane hogging is an offence. You can be fined £100 and given 3 penalty points for staying in the middle lane when the left lane is clear.
Speed and Stopping Distances
At motorway speeds, everything happens faster. Your stopping distance is much longer.
| Speed | Stopping Distance (dry) | Stopping Distance (wet) |
|---|---|---|
| 60 mph | 73 metres (18 car lengths) | ~110 metres |
| 70 mph | 96 metres (24 car lengths) | ~145 metres |
Keep at least a 2-second gap from the car in front. In rain, double it to 4 seconds.
Motorway Safety Rules
- Never reverse on a motorway — even on the hard shoulder or slip road.
- Never stop unless it's an emergency.
- Always use mirrors and signal before changing lanes.
- Don't undertake. Passing on the left is generally not allowed (except in congestion when all lanes are moving slowly).
- Red X signals mean the lane is closed. You must move out of it immediately.
What to Do If You Break Down
- Try to reach the hard shoulder or an emergency refuge area.
- Turn on your hazard lights.
- Get out of the car through the left-hand (passenger) side if it's safe.
- Stand well away from the traffic — behind the crash barrier if there is one.
- Call for help using the emergency telephone or your mobile.
- Never try to fix the car yourself on the motorway.
Smart Motorways
Smart motorways use technology to manage traffic. They can be confusing for new drivers.
- Variable speed limits: Overhead signs show temporary speed limits. You must obey them.
- Hard shoulder running: Some smart motorways open the hard shoulder as an extra lane during busy times.
- Emergency refuge areas: On smart motorways without a hard shoulder, these are your safe stopping points.
- Red X: If a red X appears over a lane, leave it immediately. It means the lane is closed.
Motorway driving gets easier with practice. Start with quiet times (mid-morning or early afternoon) and build your confidence gradually. Stay left, keep your distance, and stay alert.
